I really do appreciate this forumn.
Am actually new to the United States and I intend to continue my practice as a medical laboratory Scientist. Am also aware I will require state licensure to practice here in Minnesota. Am not quite sure if on ground work experience is needed prior to AMT exams.
If at all needed, are there any such internship programs available here in MN to newcomers like myself and how do I go about it.
Any info/guide will be appreciated.
Nah, you can find it online too.
From the ASCP site, go to "My Account " then go to "Membership" then to "View/Print Membership ID card" This card has both your mebership ID as well as your Certification number.
Do you have to actually be an ASCP member to access that (the one with the $50 subscription)? I see no way to find out my certification number and my wall certification is still not in my possession yet from ASCP!
I know this is upwards of 3 years old, but hopefully you'll see this. :)

Hey guys, does one need to have already taken microbiology and statistics before applying for the TTUHSC program?
What is the cost like for the program for out of state students? I read on here some were able to sit for the CA exam after during a longer rotation. Can anyone elaborate on that?

Medical Technologist Forum - Failed at 1st MLT job: [QUOTE who="Pamela in Thiensville, Wisco...
I started my first MLT job right after my graduation at 2007 in a medium sized hospital for couple years.
I was working until a week before my delivery for my daughter.
I preferred to raise my kid at home.I quite my job.
Now I am ready to go back to work.
I had a few interviews.
It went well, but they didn't hire me.
I think the reason is because there is a gap in my previous job until now.
I don't know what can I do.
Anybody can help me I will appreciate it.
I was in the same case, there was two years gap on my resume because of my pregnancy. I suggest you should go for PRN or part time position, that would give you a better chance to get you inside, then wait for the opportunity to get a FT.

I believe you need 400 points to pass the MLT exam and that the test is adaptive meaning the more questions you get right the higher point value of the question. Each question answered correctly will give a tougher question and a higher point value. If you get a few questions wrong in a row the point value and toughness go down. It makes sense that you only need 40 ten point questions but the odds of that happening are slim. You will most likely get a smattering of point values based on the answers you provide. Good Luck.

There are many jobs available out there for PhDs in the sciences. USAjobs.gov has a lot of them, especially in public health. No, 8 yrs as a bench scientist doesn't count, because you were not doing diagnostic testing in a hospital/clinical lab. They are very different.

Medical Technologist Forum - Requirements to get a CA-CLS license: Out of State (DRAFT): [QUOTE who="mooseman_77 in Massapequa, N...
Hello,
Ok, this is to anybody from NY who was able to get a CLS license in California:
I have 3 degrees; Bachelors in Biology , Masters in Clinical Microbiology, and a second Bachelors in Clinical Lab Science (NAACLS approved program). I am ASCP Cerified and NYS Licensed working in NYC at a Clinical lab doing Chemistry for the last 2 years. I was also the Laboratory Manager of the Biomed Science Dept at my University for 4 years while getting my second bachelors. I want to move California. My rotations were stretched out over a year but the hours within that year wont add up to 12 months of rotations. Plus I have 3 credits (One class) of Physics. Are you telling me with all this background, they wont see me as a candidate? There has to be a New Yorker out there who has been able to grab this brass ring we all seem to be shooting for. If you are there, do my credentials suffice? I don't wanna get let down and lose 230 bucks on an application I know will be dead in the water. Insight? Help? Oh, one more thing. My Clinical Chem courses included instrumentation training. Would that fulfill the light and electricity course that they talk about?
Its really not as hard to get the license as people make it out to be. Submit all your stuff to LFS and ask what they need and follow up periodically. It'll take about 3-6 months.
Btw CA is very expensive though, and the transit isnt as good as NYC. I hope pay isnt your motivating factor to move to CA.

Medical Technologist Forum - MLT Transition to CLS in California: Hi Guys, I have been doing some rese...
Hi Guys,
I have been doing some research on the forums but can not seem to find a concrete answer. I am currently a student in an MLT program in Indiana accredited by the NAACLS where I should be taking my ASCP exam upon completion. I am originally from California and intend on moving back to California after working for about 2 years.
If I wanted to become a CLS/MT in California what routes would I take? Can I basically get a bachelors in any degree and just take the science and math pre-reqs? What about a 1 year internship? If anyone can help, I'd truly appreciate it. Thank you!

Medical Technologist Forum - I have a Bachelor degree in Biology and I'm interested in this field, but I have some questions: [QUOTE who="Sarah in Florence, South Car...
Niko, I'm not entirely sure if you would qualify since you don't have experience in three of the four main clinical areas (blood bank , hematology, and microbiology). If you do qualify, it's going to be pretty tough to learn all the information necessary to pass the test without ever seeing those parts of the lab . I know South Carolina has an program that allows you to take classes online if a hospital will sponsor and train you in all the departments. It might be worth looking into if there's something similar in North Carolina.
Ed, there's a possibility of segueing into forensic science from medical technology, it is actually what I was looking to do. First, I wouldn't watch CSI as a glimpse into the life of a forensic scientist. When you get a position, you need to go to police training and then spend nearly a year being re-trained to apply all the info you learned in MT school to dead bodies and about blood splatter, etc. But you get a gun and a badge, so that's pretty sweet.
I'm honestly not sure what degree you have, Ed, but to become an MT you need a science based background/BS and to get enrolled in a 1-2 year program to gain the clinical education and experience OR you need to find a 4-year MT program and get enrolled in that. Then, you need to sit for a certifying exam (NCA or ASCP).
Sarah could you please email me the program that South Carolina allows you to take if a hospital sponsors you
