I was just fired from my job in a hospital. How will I ever get a new position? I have plenty of references, but I'm sure it will come out in a regular employment verification that I am not eligible for rehire.

I am interested in becoming a MT/MLT. However, im not sure what pathway to take. I already have a BS in an unrelated science field. Within that course of study I did take chem, micro, and other related courses. Is it possible that education bit can transfer? or should I start from the bottom with the Associate degree and work my way up?

Hi, I have completed my MHS (Medical Laboratory Sciences) and MS (Molecular Biology) from Quinnipiac University, Connecticut in 2011. I have the same problem Sherry had 7 years ago, and doesn't seem like there's any good answer. Just graduated with a biological BS degree, and I want to apply to a 1 year CLS program. However, there's no good way to take the 3 or so prerequisite classes I still need (medical microbiology, immunology, hematology, and possibly analytical chem), without getting a second bachelors in CLS or MT. A lot of CLS programs specifically state they don't accept classes from Weber State University. Anybody have a good solution?
I did an online MLT to MT program. It was mostly honor system, aside from major exams. You only screwed yourself if you cheated on the coursework because you would certainly not pass the big exams or your registry. It was a great program. I have now been a MT for 3 years and am loving the pay. I think its a great idea for MLTs to consider. You don't have to move or quit your job. Only one course at a time. I'm not limited to any area in the lab since I am a full blown ASCP CLS generalist. Doing the BS with a year of experience is too limiting.
What school did you enroll in?

What is the typical salary for a Medical Technologist in Illinois? Preferably in suburban areas. Are there a lot of healthcare facilities/hospitals? I'm thinking about moving to Illinois for lower cost of living. Here in Massachusetts we make around 25-27/hr as starting salary and I've seen some seniors who make 43. I have almost 2 years of experience and am certified as a MLS(ASCP).
There are many jobs available out there for PhDs in the sciences. USAjobs.gov has a lot of them, especially in public health . No, 8 yrs as a bench scientist doesn't count, because you were not doing diagnostic testing in a hospital /clinical lab . They are very different.
Hi Taylor, Thanks for your information. Do you have any idea getting public health certification on-line? Thanks, Raj
Planning on taking my generalist exam through AAB. Anyone have any good, useful advice for studying?
Nobody has any good advice here besides 1 entry. Everyone just seems to be fighting between ASCP & AAB. Honestly I don't care what people think of which exam- I just want to pass in order to keep my job. Just took mine today. It was a lot different than what I thought it was.
Hi Ahmed, yes I used medialab which is the same thing as labce. I don't think the questions at passascp.org change, but it seems they are adding to it. When I first bought it there were 121 questions and last time I checked it's 128. As for recalls, I remember the Hgb question and lipemia and I had one or two questions on ubrobilinogen, when it's positive and negative in urine. Even tho this was in passascp.org I still had difficulty figuring out, so try to understand bilirubin cycle in liver, kidneys and intestine very well. Another one I remember that I had two questions on were the ABO discrepancies, try to understand those as well. Again, take the test as soon as you can after school (if you are in school now) and good luck!.
Thank you for this valuable recommendations, All the best in your future career
Wow Rus, I remember how we would argue back in the days MT vs MLT and how you would vigorously defend MLTs. I'm glad to see that your perspective has changed now that you are in a CLS program, as education does make a difference, and the difference in pay is deserved. To Samantha, all I can say is you made a mistake. After having a BS in biotech why would you go get an AS in MLT???!! You're going backwards. At least go for the BS in CLS. You could have probably worked as an MLT with your BS alone.
I'm an MLT and I just got a job at a reference lab starting at $25.00 per hour Sweet!

I am about to finish my BS-CLS with honors and I am confident about passing the ASCP. I already have a BS Biology so I will be taking the ASCP before graduation in June 2017. Once I do that, when exactly do I "apply" to take the CA-CLS exam or quiz? Also I do not have the "minimum 32 weeks" but when we rotate in each lab, its well over 40 hours/week so our 20 weeks is more than what most do in 32+. Our program director will be writing directly to LFS.
