Hmmm, is this in OK? My thoughts are that new graduates many times are easier to train in new instruments/techniques, etc because they are fresh out of school. In other words "it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks" and that many times is true. Many MTs that have been in the lab for the last 15+ years just want to be on the bench and not bothered by anything else (many, not all). This includes those opportunities for advancement because that would be "too much work and responsibility."
So management will go then for a MLT who is up for the challenge as a supervisor. Rest if the staff can't get mad if they were not offered the position, especially if they didn't ask for it or asked to be considered...
