...I got a BS in Earth Science in 2010, and have spent the last 3 yrs doing environmental laboratory testing... I was originally thinking that the best way to get an MT cert is to go into an MLT program and then work for a few years and apply for the MLS(ASCP) cert through Route 2. My degree didn't require all the bio or chem credits that I have to get, and am wondering if I can take those at the tech school in addition to my MLT program? Will ASCP accept those credits?
You'd have to contact them to know for sure, but the way I read the requirements to sit for the MLS(ASCP)CM cert is that you need a BS in a relatged field... and that you've taken enough classes in each. It shouldn't be a problem if you have some of those classes later, and they weren't specifically for your BS, only that you took them... but that's just my interpretation. ASCP seems real hung-up on the whole "must have a BS" thing for MT, regardless of competency. Email them to find out for sure though.
The only MT program around here is one that I don't think I will get into, and it will be 3 years of classes to even complete.
yeah, I looked into the UW BS-MT program as well. Its a bit of a mess IMO. Thats a program for high school kids who took a year of basic entry-level pre-reqs so they can get a BS AND sit to certify for the MLS(ASCP)CM. You need to consider the other routes, it'll be much cheaper and faster IMO. Clover Park Tech College (CPTC) in Lynnwood, WA and Shoreline both have 4 quarter (1 full calendar year, no summer off) MLT courses that are NAACLS-approved and will allow you to test for MLT(ASCP)CM when done. They're pretty cheap too IMO. Once you have MLT status, you can take the MT(AAB) exam to get technologist level cert, though I haven't seen any AAB listing in local job postings.. everyone seems to want ASCP. With 2 years MLT experience though, you can sit for the MLS(ASCP)CM.
