I am a MLT that was military trained in the US Air Force. I had worked in California as a phlebotomist because I couldn't work in the main lab but on the weekends I went to the AF Base and worked the main lab there. I do not have any college but I am very well trained. Upon moving to Washington state, I ended up working as a non-registered MLT due to my military experience but no college. I did that for a couple of years but decided to get my certification, so I went for AMT. I did take the test and passed first time. Upon my passing, I was given a raise and congrats from the MT(ASCP) people who consider me as an equal. In fact, I have moved up to a low level supervisor positions over MT(ASCP) people because I am simply a better lab tech than they are. I have about 15 years of total experience and routinely run circles around MT(ASCP) techs. To me, having ASCP behind your title means nothing, besides that you spent more for your piece of paper than I did. Having that title does not make you a better lab tech...experience does. My MT(ASCP) with MBA supervisor agrees with me.
I'm a med tech educated and trained in France. There is only one way in France is to be a med tech is to get a 2 years degree after our high school diploma. I ended up as a MLT with AAB certification and a CA license. I found a job and I had to earn the respect and recognition for my fellow MT coworkers. ASCP is maybe the most recognized certification but in my case they won't accept me because of my foreign education. I don't think I'm a better or worst tech than a ASCP certified. Anyway, I'm planning on moving to WA and wonder if I could even work up there... Is the MLT certified by AMT recognized in WA?
