So just a background on myself. I am a licensed MLT in the United States Navy and I am starting to think about my future and how I want to become an MT. I understand that since I have the ASCP MLT certifcation, I can finish my Bachelors of Science degree and will be able to challenge the ASCP MT exam. My question is, will any B.S. do or would I have to follow through with a MLS/CLS program? A coworker of mine told me it would be a waste of money finishing a MLS/CLS program since I am already an MLT in the military with 4+ years of experience where I could just do a B.S. in Public Health that would be faster and in the end I would still qualify to take the ASCP MT exam. I just want to make sure this is true before I make any final decisions when to commiting to a school. I already have my A.S. in Health Science Laboratory Technology through GWU where I did my MLT program.
Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and urinalysis/body fluids in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory* within the last ten years.
