Hey everyone, Im a undergrad at SDSU and have about 1.5-2 years left till a graduate with my BS in microbiology w/ an emphasis in clinical laboratory science. My question is what do you guys recommend for me to have to give me a leg up on other applicants and what do you think is most important during the admission process (experience,gpa...)? I really want to do this for my career but Im becoming a little discouraged after reading all the forums and hearing how competitive it is.Any advice or input will be much appreciated and helpful thank you :)
Hi CLS_in_training, I took the exact route you are doing and it all worked out so don't be discouraged! It is true that having experience really helps not only for your resume but in answering interview questions so I highly recommend that you do whatever you can to get some. Like people have said earlier, it is really hard to get a job without any kind of license so I settled for a "volunteer" position at Scripps. Most of the Scripps clinics and hospitals in SD have labs so try there if you can't find a job in any labs. Your upper div CLS classes at SDSU can be tough so make sure you work hard and get good grades, not only to boost your GPA but those instructors are most helpful for getting advice and recommendations you may need. Good luck!
