In fact, I once applied to a job in far north California and was only offered ~60k/yr. So its mostly the expensive metros that pay well. I make around 100k/yr but it costs over 700k to buy a 2 bedroom condo in my area. In North Carolina I made about 47k but it cost about 100-150k to buy the same house. So who is richer? Probably the guy working in NC. Michigan and Oklahoma pay even better and are just as cheap.
