Most recently I've noticed hospitals finally putting in effort to hire, train and retain new med techs to reduce their shortage and dependence on travel agencies. I've also seen a lot more students join the field which is good. Luckily a lot of the bitterness of this forum hasn't driven away too many people. Honestly the job is not that bad. Some hospitals/labs are worse than others, but if you don't like it you can find a new job within weeks if you really try. Yes you are going to have to work, and sometimes you might have to work you're entire shift! *gasp* It isn't a job for the lazy (unless you're a first shifter; they're all lazy). The biggest problem I've found isn't the work, it's the co-workers. And really isn't that every jobs main problem? It'll probably get really, really bad in the next several years as more baby boomers hit retirement age meaning current techs can move easily, negotiate salary more easily or relax now that all the old bitter btards have left and aren't in the way during the morning run anymore. If a nurse starts bothering you, you tell them you're working on it. If a doctor is demanding results, tell them it's a-comin'. If you can't even handle having a phone conversation with someone, then maybe this isn't a good job but I think it would work well for a lot of people and there are plenty of opportunities to be had. If you get bent over, that's on you. Don't be a pushover, know your worth and ride it out until it's time to hit the time clock.
