Hi everyone. I am doing my MLS clinical rotations for my BS degree right now and I've noticed something. The labs in our school are getting a lot of new automation; there was a brand new blood typing machine in the blood bank that could type 50 samples in 30 minutes. They just installed a BioMerieux microbial identification system that can identify bacteria, yeast, and mold from any plate within a few hours. Most of the technologists were very excited about the new technology because it will make their jobs so much easier, and no one seemed concerned that their jobs might be in jeopardy. I'd think it would be more of a concern in the micro lab because they aren't always swamped with work 24/7 like blood bank is. What effect has new rapid testing had on your job? Were more uneducated workers forced out of the lab? Did it just make everything easier? Do you wish you had more rapid testing technology or do you feel like your skills would not be put to use?
