There Is no advantage of being Medical Technologist. I have been MT (ASCP) for almost 18 years before to get a decent salary and always with the hope things are going to change, but I doubt it. Pay increase is very slow and compare with other healthcare proffesional we are in the lowest scale. In this career we have to work weekends, Holydays, evenings, nights, as is the need of the department. You are always working with human body fluids, so need to use standard precautions, cause it can be dangerous. You work like in a factory and it is a very stressful environment. Medical Technologists play a very important role in the medical diagnosis of a patient and I believe they should be treated with respect and be better compensated. Lately The turnover rate is high cause new techs realize that is not what they thought was going to be, other techs changing careers cause the high stress and the low pay; this is a reality and that is why right now there is a shortage nationwide and are paying sign on bonus so techs go to work. If you want a good career and also make decent amount of money not in 20 years so you can pay your mortgage and student loans think twice and investigate first to invest your money in this career.
