Hi DG! It's hard to say if your experience will count when you didn't elaborate on what your experience really is. Research experience does count if it is in molecular biology. Have you been doing 6 months full time in a research facility? Then that will count. Hope that helps!
Thanks MAX, Yeah basically I am a postdoc in a university hospital research center. but its nothing clinical, thats what i was concerned about. Its pure molecular biology but have been doing for several years now and still doing. I guess my concern was does the basic molecular biology experience counts as towards the experience and secondly who evaluates if my experience is deemed eligible. reading your comment sounds like I should be eligible, Thanks again

The resources I used were medialab (labce), Bottom Line Approach: Patsy Jarreau, and passascp.org. The passascp.org was kind of a last minute crash course for me. I did the quiz (134 questions) 3 days before I took my exam just in case those questions were on the exam. There did end up being a number of questions from the quiz on there. I would recommend you use the passascp.org quiz to supplement your studies because the questions on there are very close to what's on the exam. Good luck the next go 'round!

Ok, so as I don't see much for helpful information on studying for the MT(AAB), I'll give what helped me study. My 4 study tips: 1. LabCE.com. It has a very good exam simulator that gave me a good grasp of how the actual test is layed out. 2. Medical Laboratory Science Review, 4th edition by Robert Harr. A friend also took the test and passed and she suggested this book. The book comes with a CD-ROM that also has an exam simulator, but LabCE.com's is a better simulator. 3. The PER handbook recommended by the AAB. 4. DON'T CRAM! Please plan out your study time. Those are what I used to study and I passed the exam. It is more difficult than I originally thought, but it is passable. Not to mention the AAB exam is not an adaptive exam. 240 preselected questions. Good luck!

Hi, I am from texas and my wife is from Perth Australia. We recently relocated to the east bay area for a job that I took. My wife is now searching for work. She has a BS from Perth Australia, I don't remember the school but I have seen the piece of paper :P She has been working in labs for a good 7yrs, she worked in London for the world health organization for quite a while. Then when we were in Houston she was working for Baylor in research running a flow cytometry machine. My main concern for her is the CLS program. Can she qualify? It seems like all of the jobs require this certification.

I share you all frustrations. California LFS is the worst I encounter so far. I've been trying to get the limited license for 3 months already. So far I got an email from LFS saying my application is deficient. They just asking me for one year of CLIA experrience outside of California. But there are not accepting the one year experience that I submitted to them. Very frustrating!!! Don't know what to do. I'm MB-ASCP certified, have worked as a molecular scientist for almost 20 years in biotech with 2 years of CLIA experience outside of California. LFS still said my application is deficient. LFS email keeps asking for my 1 year of CLIA experience outside of California! The email said my lab asst and lab tech CLIA experience is not acceptable. I don't why is my CLIA experience outside of california is not acceptable! My email goes unanswered.

Hi, I am doing Masters in Medical Lab Science. I did not do Bachelor in Medical Lab Science, so I am taking some undergrad level courses in my MS as well, which my professors said would be ok for license exam. I am from India, now living in Florida. I have a medical school degree (MBBS, bachelor of medicine and surgery) from India. After having MS in MLS here in the States, I want to work as a medical lab scientist in any hospital laboratory in Florida. Within short time I want to be a lab supervisor/manager. How should I follow that path? Also, would my MBBS degree help me to become a lab supervisor within short time? A medical school's bachelor degree and a MLS MS degree will not be helpful anyway during my career?? Thank you very much and thanks for your time!! Bests! Ashmita

Thanks

Hey Carlos, I took the exam almost three years ago. I failed the first time and passed on the second. The first time I barely studied and just missed passing. The second time, I studied for about six weeks prior to the exam, about an hour a day, sometimes more if I had the chance. The resources I used most heavily were the chemistry section of Clinical Laboratory Science Review: A Bottom Line Approach Third Edition and the Lab CE simulator. I also tried some of the questions from the green BOC question book, but I found those questions discouraging and not representative of what was on the exam. I took the exam outline from ASCP and wrote notes and study cards for each of the sections. I found that this exam was mostly recall, not necessarily application. Good luck!
What would I need to do to become a MT, I finish my BS in Biology this May. I think the MLT program through J Sarge is decent. Once you get your MLT, either work for two years and take the MLS exam, or try to find an MLS program. As far as working in a lab, you probably would be hard pressed to find a hospital job. They usually require ASCP or ASCP eligible and certified within a year. You can try reference labs, they're usually a little more lenient with their requirements. I know True Health and AIB both hire biology degrees. Good luck!
I am about to finish my BS-CLS with honors and I am confident about passing the ASCP. I already have a BS Biology so I will be taking the ASCP before graduation in June 2017. Once I do that, when exactly do I "apply" to take the CA-CLS exam or quiz? Also I do not have the "minimum 32 weeks" but when we rotate in each lab , its well over 40 hours/week so our 20 weeks is more than what most do in 32+. Our program director will be writing directly to LFS.
Seabrook Texas! I miss Houston a lot. However, very unfortunately I graduated from MD Anderson we have about 8 months clinical rotation with "well over 40 hrs/week". I tried to apply the CA right after but failed. Two Suggestions: 1: check every courses you have, especially physics and chemistry, remember, CLINICAL chem and ANALYTICAL chem are the only chem they approved 2. work in a lab as GENERALIST for a full year. Asking coordinator and each lab you rotated to proof your hour is way harder for CA. Make it simple. 4 bench, one year, done. At the end, I do not care any other thing. My friend in CA got offer from Kaiser and they pay roughly $130k. Come on, double even triple than the other states, every effort pay back!!! My mateiral has been approved by LFS and I am also on the way to CA.

Same here, studied cognitive psy and graduated 2013. I live in NYC and you'd think it's easier to find a job but no. Most jobs are minimum wage, and honestly that's not worth the time, even tutoring part time pays more than that. And if you look at the jobs on indeed.com you'd see that most high paying jobs (above $45k) are for people with 4+ years of experience. I don't think going back to school is the answer. As I see it, the only degree that guarantees a job is for accounting and nursing, anything else you need a masters or doctors. I'm learning how to program while tutoring on the side. I think if your a Psych major and took a lot of statistics, you'd want some kind of data analyst kind of job, which requires programming. Personally I'm going to try to get into Law School for the long term, and try to earn some $$ with programming.
